Sophia Constantine
I was born on Yuin Country. I currently live and work on the traditional lands of the people of the Kulin Nation.
I graduated from The Victorian College of the Arts in 2012 with a Graduate Certificate in Arts & Community Engagement. Since graduating my practice has taken multiple paths.
I have performed, written and directed productions at theatre's around Melbourne including Malthouse Theatre, 45downstairs, and La Mama Theatre. I have also built a practise over the last 8 years within Disability Arts as an art facilitator and director using drama and visual art tools to devise and direct theatre performances, visual art exhibitions and fashion shows. I currently work as Lead Artists with Arts Access Victoria on their Way Out West program. As well as one on one mentoring with artists from the Way Out West program.
In more recent years I have worked at La Mama Theatre as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator this work adds layers and knowledge to my practice. It allows me to have a creative input to a vital arts organisation in Melbourne as well as the opportunity to support other artists in their creation.
I am an award winning performance maker my practice in more recent years has manifested in drag, cabaret and spoken word, encompassing characteristics of performance art. My work is provocative and draws from personal experiences with sharp twists of creativity. I work with symbolism and the body to reflect on how different bodies are politicised. A lot of my work stems from a deep yearning to respond to oppressive patriarchal paradigms.
Recently I worked in partnership with Women*s Circus on a production called Chi Chi's Storytime. I performed this at Midsumma Festival 2019 and an IDAHOBIT Medibank event. Chi Chi celebrates rainbow families with an engaging story telling experience that reflects a message of love and acceptance of diverse gender and family experiences for kids aged 4 - 10 and their adults. But why should the kids get all the stories?! Chi Chi has so much fun spicing up some old traditional folk stories drawing from her Italian heritage things get a little saucy.
